Iowa's transit history dates back to the first half of the 19th
Century when keel boats and stage coaches began offering intercity
travel opportunities between Iowa communities. Local transit services
started in the second half of that century. Along the way Iowa has
had one of the first electrified trolley systems in the nation and
one of the first elevated street railways. The following pages tell
the general history of transit in Iowa, as well as presenting local
histories from the following communities around the state: Ames,
Region 1.
