| Public transit plays a key role in tying American
communities together, especially in helping to integrate various
groups that for one reason or another are not well served by other
transportation modes. The attention that lawmakers and regulators
have paid to transit reflects that critical role. There are laws
to make sure that services are open to all. There are laws to make
sure the service is safe. (Then there are regulations that are tied
to the public funding.) The Iowa Code page provide links to some
of the statutes and regulations that impact Iowa’s transit
industry. The Agreement Binder page provides links to various documents
specifically referred to in the Iowa DOT’s funding agreements
with local transit systems.
Funding is a critical issue for transit. Iowa’s public transit
systems depend on a variety of federal, state and local funding
sources to provide their services. The Funding pages describe where
these funds come from and how transit systems access them.
In a world of change, it seems that every year there are bills
both in Congress and in the Iowa General Assembly that may have
impacts upon public transit. The State Legislation page provides
a link to the Iowa General assembly where pending bills that might
impact transit are described, as well as providing details on recently
enacted legislation dealing with transit.
