| ITS Grant Description |
The Iowa Transit ITS project intends to help
transit systems deploy ITS components in an integrated, cost-effective,
two-phased approach.
Phase I will be the development of a statewide transit deployment
plan. This will include a review of current ITS projects in the
state and in similar states, analysis of communication systems
in Iowa, analysis of ITS and communication needs of Iowa transit
systems, the development of a regional architecture, and the actual
deployment plan. The analysis will be closely coordinated with
an Iowa DOT communication study that will look at the opportunity
for integrated communication between various state agencies. The
ITS plan will identify the benefits and costs, including long-term
operational costs, associated with each ITS component. The plan
will identify needs and benefits for all of Iowa's ITS components.
The plan will identify needs and benefits for all of Iowa's systems,
including those that do not currently have an identified project.
Phase
II will be the deployment of ITS in as many transit systems as
funds allow, utilizing the deployment plan for guidance. Currently
10 regional transit systems, two small urban systems, and three
large urban systems have identified a desire for ITS projects.
Additional opportunities may be identified in the deployment plan
to eventually achieve an integrated system statewide. A Program
of Projects will be submitted to FTA at the beginning of Phase
II, listing the transit systems that will be included as subrecipients
of this funding. Since the possibility exists of integrating a
system statewide, the DOT information provided in this application
includes all 35 transit systems in Iowa. |
